This Week in Calvinism - July 26, 2013
- Brett Younger, associate professor of preaching at the McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta, tries to be funny while insulting Calvinists. Those whose knowledge of John Calvin is limited to predestination and Servetus might get a chuckle out of it.
- What about the Calvinist antimission movement?
- Please. Don't comment on Calvinism if you have no idea what it is.
- A professing Christian husband married to a Jewish wife writes, "God chose corporate, national Israel, not each individual Israelites (sic). ... I can't seem to find a way to pry the Jewish people or even one single, individual Jewish person out of the covenant promises that started with Abraham, continued into Sinai, and that were renewed for the future in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36." Um...Romans 9?
- J. I. Packer's conversion.
I one sense, it is sad to read these (linked) “arguments” against Calvinism because they are so uniformly uninformed, ignorant, and illogical. In another sense, I find them strangely comforting. Calvinism is far greater than predestination. Yet, I almost never encounter any critic arguing against Calvin’s view of the Trinity, the sacraments, the church or the state, or nearly any other tenet of Calvinism. No, what reduces these critics to sputtering, inchoate, fits of rage is the notion that they are not the autonomous, sovereign, and independent creatures they think they are. If these are the best that can be thrown at the doctrines of grace, I’m quite comforted.
ReplyDeleteWoooah !
ReplyDeleteI have read from time to time laughable columns, opinions, essays... about Calvinism but Brett YOUNGER's piece should enter some kind of Museum. It's the worst uninformed piece of crap I have read so far. Not only are his "arguments" inepts but how old is this guy ? Is he just out of High school to write such garbage as "Calvinists are not like terrorists; you can reason with terrorists."
Really. Why don't you get a life Mr. YOUNGER and start reading the Word instead of "making fun" (some fun I had reading this ... ) of a theology that seems to be way above your comprehension.
P.S. If I use your blog to comment on this piece it's simply that ABP has chosen to deactivate the comment for this "satire".
Just a follow-up :
ReplyDeleteI have contacted by mail ABP News, Dean Culpepper and the so-hilarious Younger as I think there are limits to so-called humor, especially when you are dealing with theological issues involving living individuals.
I don't think that to defame Calvinists as terrorists or to use Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin's names in any kind of piece involving Christians is nothing but offensive.
