You know your church has simply run out of ideas when it chooses to substitute gospel-centered teaching with green-centered teaching:
The theme for this
VBS package? Mark 4:1-9, the parable of the sower, of course! Seeds. Planting. Growing. See how nicely that ties in to environmentalism? Here's a sample of the study plan:
And you thought the parable had something to do with the preaching of the gospel and the responses of those who hear it. No, the
real lesson we're supposed to learn is that God's love can help us overcome life's challenges, enabling us to better care for the planet.
Man, Spurgeon was
way over-thinking this parable.
Sparkhouse is one of the most liberal versions of the Emergent church that is out there. Everything that I have seen from them has been absolutely devoid of the Gospel and has been little more than left-wing social-gospel. Yet even the social gospel proponents of old would not dare be as trite as this.
ReplyDeleteWell. That was pitiful. And that's all I've got to say about that.
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of being redundant, and having failed to think of something original with equalforce, I can merely say that was pathetic. True child evangelism and discipleship is hard enough without mucking it up with altruistic sound bites drilled into children in place of the loving and patient sharing of the gospel.
ReplyDeleteThat borders on blasphemy and by borders I mean we set up the border and they are on the other side.
ReplyDeleteWell, whaddya know - sifting through our church mail today, I found a mailer from Cokesbury advertising their "Galactic Blast" VBS program featuring "Daily Green Earth Tips." Even the VBS mascot is a green gorilla named Galileo.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping the tripe in the posted video was an isolated incident - apparently not.

yes please whatever you do DO NOT TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND
ReplyDeletecontinue doing just what you are doing and the world will rush right by leaving you behind and your closed minded thoughts and close minded ways.
Can you imagine what the Pharisees of Jesus day said about this parable when he told it? I bet it was hauntingly familiar to what you are saying!
Clearly you didn't get past your anti-environmentalism mindset to see that the program actually WAS trying to relate the Gospel lesson in ways that children could comprehend. Getting children in touch with the earth is a wonderful way to also get them in touch with their God. Please be less narrow-minded in your approach.
ReplyDeleteThe gospel stands for good news. The teachings of the church should be about all good things in life, not just about actual writ and scripture. I do think though that these kids should get some vacation bible school materials and go camping or something. I think I learned the most from a bible camp with my peers.
