This Week in Calvinism - August 14, 2009
- Meet Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833), America's first black preacher and a Calvinist.
- Dr. Dave Noffsinger is "an enemy of the doctrinal teachings of John Calvin or any that line up with his heresy." He claims Calvinism destroys the very person and purpose of God because Christ "came into the world to save sinners! All sinners!" So, since not all sinners are saved, does that mean God failed? Calvinists happen to believe that Christ actually saved everyone given to him by the Father (John 10:29).
- Tullian Tchividjian is correct when he notes that every church is dying.
- Was Spurgeon KJVO?
Yesterday I posted comments on excerpts from Dr. Noffsinger's post, from a Baptist layman's perspective, here: http://thelightheartedcalvinist.com/2009/08/13/gosh-now-im-the-enemy-of-a-baptist-pastor/ and sent him a link to the post in his comment section, following up on a question I had posed the day before. Neither has made it through his moderation to the blog as of now (Friday PM EDT).
ReplyDeleteCalling those with whom we disagree within the family of faith "enemies" doesn't seem to be quite proper, is it? My Arminian friends are certainly not my "enemies" and I pray none of our Calvinist brethren think so - belief in a confession or system won't save them or me, will it? Bowing the knee to Christ alone in faith and repentance is our hope and Calvinists and Arminians alike do this. (But we do pray also God enlightens them, right?) :)
I asked Dr. Noffsinger if it was his intention that his 4 scenario points with his daughters so closely parallel God's interaction with Jacob and Esau.
ReplyDeleteFrom the likes of Jimmy Swaggart to men of God like Jerry Vines, Jerry Falwell, Nelson Price, Ergun Caner and Johnny Hunt, I have witnessed one after the other creating an absolutely ludicrous strawman to be easily destroyed before the congreagtions of these men. And in a q & a at my church yesterday with our prospective senior pastor, I witnessed it once again.
ReplyDeleteCalvinism is being portrayed more often these days as heresy and sometimes it is so stated. Joe Chambers has called it heresy on his international radio program as has Swaggart. It is my hope that men like John Piper will gain an audience for those who do not understand the doctrines of grace yet denigrate them.
