Emergent leader Tony Jones is encouraging his readers to think about alternatives to the penal substitutionary "theory" of the atonement. Other emergent types, like Mike Morrell, have already been contemplating this issue.
I suppose anything is believable when you ignore the plain reading of scripture. It is amazing and sad to see so many people in this country trying to live a bible-less Christianity.
This is where theology leads to when it rejects the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible. Tony Jones (and other emergents) question everything because they simply have no authority upon which to turn for answers. How sad.
"That doctrine that is called 'Calvinist' did not spring from Calvin; we believe that it sprang from the great founder of all truth." -Charles H. Spurgeon
