Timothy D. Terrell of the Center for Biblical Law and Economics, in his essay Nationalism in the Sanctuary, explains the problem with displaying the American and Christian flags in church sanctuaries. Definitely worth reading.
That's something that has bothered me for a while now. I'm also very uncomfortable with 'Patriotic' services. While I support our armed forces and respect those who have risked their lives to give us freedom, I just don't think the church is the appropriate place for it.
Usurping God's place in the church isn't patriotic, it's cosmic treason.
"That doctrine that is called 'Calvinist' did not spring from Calvin; we believe that it sprang from the great founder of all truth." -Charles H. Spurgeon

In many ways, it's as if the flag now serves a substitute for the cross.
